Why Tangled 2 was never made

Disney's Tangled was released in 2010 and was met with positive reactions. Despite its success, it is notable that the film never received a full-fledged sequel, while other Disney productions such as Wreck-It Ralph , Frozen , Zootopia and Moana did. Tangled co-director Nathan Greno recently shared his insight into why a follow-up never happened.

Searching for a sequel story

Disney explored the idea of making a sequel to Tangled more than once, but ran into problems finding a story strong enough to justify it. Greno said there was a meeting with the original team, where they spent hours brainstorming possible storylines. "We couldn't find a story worth telling," Greno explained. That inability to land on the right idea ultimately led to the decision not to produce a sequel.

The story's definitive ending

Tangled ends with a satisfying conclusion: Rapunzel is freed from her tower, her magical hair disappears, and the evil Mother Gothel is defeated. The love between Rapunzel and Eugene is secured, leaving little room for more story. Greno made an interesting comparison, saying: "If Pinocchio becomes a real boy, what else is there to tell?" That definitive ending makes a sequel difficult.

Other stories in the Tangled franchise

Although a full sequel to Tangled was never made, Disney found ways to continue the characters' stories. In 2012, the short film Tangled Ever After was released, showing Rapunzel and Eugene's wedding. That was followed by the TV movie Rapunzel: Before Ever After and the animated series Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure , which aired between 2017 and 2020. These projects helped keep the beloved characters alive and introduced new adventures.

The live-action remake

Disney is currently working on a live-action remake of Tangled . In this new version, Rapunzel and Flynn (Eugene) are played by Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim, with Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel. The question remains whether this adaptation will lay the groundwork for a sequel, something that has happened with other Disney live-action projects. Time will tell whether audiences will once again be surprised by a follow-up to this popular story.
