The Golden Globe Awards have expanded their categories for the 2024 ceremony, announcing the addition of 'Best Blockbuster' and 'Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy.'
As reported by Variety, a movie can claim the Best Blockbuster title if it achieves a gross income of at least $150 million on release, where $100 million should be from domestic box office collections. Eligibility for films streamed on platforms like Netflix and Hulu will depend on data from reputable industry sources.
A film like 'Barbie', the highest grossing movie of 2023, 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie', 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3', and 'Oppenheimer' could likely compete for the newly instituted Best Blockbuster award.
The Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy award seeks to acknowledge the work of comedians who've held specials on cable or streaming platforms. For eligibility, the comedy special should feature on a recognized media platform; individual social media accounts will not qualify. Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne voiced excitement for the support and celebration of comedians, while also applauding the innovation in creating blockbuster films with artistic exceptionalism.
The new 'blockbuster' category bears semblance to the 2018-introduced "Outstanding Popular Film" category by the Academy Awards. However, the Academy pulled this category due to intense critic disapproval who viewed it as a desperate move to acknowledge popular films seldom nominated for Best Picture. The Golden Globe Awards are set to air on January 7, 2024.
