500 WoW Devs Unionize: Blizzard Falls Behind Bethesda

Jul 25, 2024 10:10 AM

Over 500 World of Warcraft developers at Blizzard have successfully formed a union called the WoW Gamemaker's Guild (WoWGG) in partnership with the Communications Workers of America (CWA). Despite narrowly missing out on being the first gaming developer union to do so before Bethesda, they are united in their cause to democratize the workplace. This "wall-to-wall" union includes members from multiple departments, aiming to set a new industry standard for equal representation across all development areas, from QA to engineering. Their next big step will involve negotiating a contract with Blizzard to establish protections and benefits for employees.

Why did World of Warcraft developers form a union?n

World of Warcraft developers formed a union to ensure democratized workplace representation and to set a standard within the gaming industry. By including voices from QA, art, sound, design, engineering, and production, they aim to provide comprehensive protections and equitable treatment for all members.

World of Warcraft, often abbreviated as WoW, is an MMORPG developed by Blizzard Entertainment and is one of the most iconic and long-standing games in the genre. Since its release in 2004, WoW has seen numerous expansions and updates that kept its massive player base engaged. Blizzard’s move to unionize represents a significant shift in workplace dynamics in the game development industry, signaling a potential new era of worker rights and protections.
