Amazon is set to merge Comixology with Kindle, sparking significant backlash from the digital comics community. Comixology confirmed the app will cease to exist starting December 4, 2023, transitioning users to Kindle for their comics and manga needs. Users with existing Comixology purchases will find their libraries integrated into the Kindle app, with Comixology Unlimited offering borrowing from Kindle's extensive comics selection.
The merge follows Amazon's acquisition of Comixology in 2014 which led to a range of controversial updates, including a new interface criticized for being user-unfriendly and the removal of Comixology's own website in favor of the Amazon storefront. Key features like the Guided View and zoom functionality have been removed, and some international users now face restrictions regarding purchases.
High-profile voices, such as actor Patton Oswalt, have publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the changes, urging for a rollback to the previous version. Additionally, numerous users report issues with missing comics in their libraries post-update, expressing frustration over the loss of a dedicated comic reading platform. Fans lament the significant change, conveying a strong preference for a standalone app and marketplace tailored specifically for comics and manga.
Despite the outcry, fans of Comixology can continue reading titles until the merge date, hoping that this change might conclude a series of problematic updates that have chipped away at the quality and uniqueness of the service. With only a short time left before the merger, the comics community is vocal about preserving a distinct space for their beloved digital comics and manga.
