Jul 17, 2024 7:58 PM

Netflix Japan has announced that Mappa, the studio behind Attack on Titan, is remaking the classic 90s romcom anime Ranma ½. The series, created by Inuyasha's Rumiko Takahashi, follows martial artist Ranma Saotome who transforms into a girl when splashed with cold water and reverts back to a boy with warm water. The remake will debut exclusively on Netflix on October 5, 2024, featuring the original Japanese voice cast, direction by Kōnosuke Uda, and music by Ano and Kaoru Wada. This announcement follows the trend of reviving retro anime for modern audiences.

What is the release date for the Ranma ½ remake on Netflix?

The Ranma ½ remake will premiere exclusively on Netflix on October 5, 2024.

Ranma ½ is a celebrated series both for its slapstick harem comedy and its impact as a trans allegory. The original anime and manga have influenced many fans, and its remake by Mappa highlights its enduring appeal. This follows a trend similar to other Takahashi works, such as the 2022 remake of Urusei Yatsura by David Production, as well as upcoming projects like The Rose of Versailles and Magic Knight Rayearth.
