Borderlands 4 Launches Sooner: Is GTA 6 to Blame

Apr 29, 2025 3:18 PM

The release date of Borderlands 4 has been moved up to September 12, 2025, according to a video by Gearbox's Randy Pitchford. Originally set for September 23, the change reflects the smooth progress in development. Speculation suggests the shift might be influenced by the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6, which is also connected to 2K, the publisher of Borderlands. With Take-Two Interactive's plans for GTA 6 still under wraps, Gearbox may have opted for a safer launch window. Borderlands 4 will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, featuring four new Vault Hunters and a new enemy type called the Rippers. A new State of Play focused on the game is scheduled for April 30, 2025.

Why did Borderlands 4 change its release date?

The release date for Borderlands 4 was moved up due to positive development progress and to avoid competition with the anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, which is also connected to 2K, the parent company of Gearbox.

Borderlands is a popular action role-playing shooter series known for its distinctive cel-shaded art style and humor. The franchise has gained critical acclaim and a loyal fan base since its debut, with each installment introducing new characters, expansive worlds, and engaging cooperative gameplay. Borderlands 4 promises to continue this tradition with new content and gameplay enhancements set in an all-new planet.

Nice to see Gearbox playing 4D chess with their release window—getting ahead of GTA 6's shadow is a power move. Those Rippers better bring the chaos to match the franchise's signature mayhem

Smart move shifting the release date—nothing worse than getting overshadowed by GTA 6's inevitable hype tsunami. Can't wait to see how those new Rippers spice up the loot-and-shoot chaos
