Bungie: 'We've lost the trust of our players'

Nov 03, 2023 9:55 AM

The game developer Bungie has publicly addressed the recent round of layoffs, admitting that the company has now lost the trust of its players. Earlier in the week, it was revealed that Bungie, the developer of the popular Destiny series and old Halo titles, had laid off about 100 employees, including the well-known composer Michael Salvatori. Reports suggest that in addition to layoffs, Destiny 2's extension, The Final Shape, and a new game, Marathon, may also have been postponed.

Bungie released an official statement on their website addressing these developments. The company classified the week as one of the most challenging in their studio’s history since they had to part with employees they admired and respected. In the statement, Bungie acknowledged feedback and worries about the recent Destiny expansion Lightfall and the unveiling of The Final Shape. The company accepted that they had failed to surprise and entertain their players, assuring their fanbase that things would change in the future.

According to Bungie, the next steps are clear: they must make The Final Shape an unforgettable gaming experience. The developer aims to create something as extraordinary as the best games they've produced before — a fitting culmination that pays respect to the journey they have shared with their players over the past decade, such as Forsaken, The Witch Queen, and The Taken King. Bungie concluded their statement by ensuring that over 650 people are working on The Final Shape and more information about what to expect in the coming weeks, including the start of a new season later this month, would be provided.
