Cities: Skylines 2 fans will have to wait longer for mod support and slower patch releases as the developers focus on significant overhauls. Although Colossal Order CEO Mariina Hallikainen has promised the modding editor is a priority, she notes it could take months to release a satisfactory version. Meanwhile, the console editions for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 have been postponed to the first half of 2024 to ensure parity in quality and performance with the PC version.
Since its launch, Cities: Skylines 2 has experienced mixed reactions—achieving high player counts and top sales on Steam but also facing criticism for bugs and performance issues. The commitment to improving performance is ongoing, but it will result in less frequent updates as the team at Colossal Order works on bigger, more complex fixes aimed at boosting GPU performance and addressing level of detail (LOD).
The upcoming console versions will feature all main editor tools except for code modding and asset importing, restricted by the console platforms. Still, console players will have access to user-created mods and custom maps through Paradox Mods. Any improvements made in the PC version's performance are expected to benefit the console releases as well.
Looking ahead, Colossal Order's roadmap indicates a future with improved performance and enriched modding capabilities, despite the current hitches and extended timelines. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for updates and to look forward to the enhanced gameplay experiences ahead.
