There has been an outcry from the Mortal Kombat 1 community after Warner Bros. Games announced they would sell a seasonal Fatality for actual currency. The Fatality made available in the shop carries a price that has disillusioned many players, resulting in calls for boycotts and some entirely leaving the game due to its cost.

The Halloween Fatality has been added to MK1's Premium Shop, priced at 1200 Dragon Krystals - equatable to $10. This move was preceded by patch notes that vaguely alluded to a "Halloween Fatality added to the Premium Store," which Warner Bros. Games later confirmed. The Fatality sees an opponent's head covered by a Jack-o-Lantern before bugs pour out.

Responses from players have been largely negative, taking umbrage at the Fatality's $10 price, especially when added to the game's $70 base price (or $110 for those who purchased the premium edition). Many members within the community see this move as a sign that MK1 is transitioning towards the freemium model, despite not being free.

There have been increased calls on Twitter and Reddit to boycott the Fatality's price, with players imploring others not to buy it. Despite player complaints about aggressive monetization, more MK1 DLC seems imminent, with developers suggesting potential DLC characters. Since MK1's release last month, players have found entertainment in discovering everything from an astounding 89-hit combo to a bizarre Player 1 advantage. IGN gave MK1 an 8 in their review, lauding its quality-of-life changes and single-player story mode while criticising its online play and invasions mode.
