In a significant development, video game Destiny 2, created by Bungie, is planning to eliminate its in-game currency - Legendary Shards. The information was revealed in Bungie's latest Destiny 2 blogpost, announcing pivotal changes to how the game's economy functions.
Legendary Shards will cease to be a part of the gaming landscape with the launch of the upcoming expansion, The Final Shape. However, changes will begin rolling out from Season 23, commencing at the end of November. Starting from this phase, players won't incur the cost of Legendary Shards while interacting with the Monument to Lost Lights and the non-Adept focusing system. The complete phase-out of Legendary Shards will occur with the expansion's release.
This currency, earned by dismantling Legendary gear, has been a part of the game for several years now. It facilitated gamers in enhancing their gear's potency and decoding Engrams. But Bungie has grappled with balancing the currency's supply, with older players having an excess, while newcomers struggle to earn enough to participate in new features. Adjustments to the cost of Legendary Shards that would satisfy both categories of players proved unviable.
Legendary Shards have also had issues with soft-exploits, allowing players to amass more of them than Bungie anticipated. Emphasizing their commitment towards making the game simpler and reducing clutter while respecting gamers' time investment, Bungie acknowledges past missteps and asserts that they continually strive to learn and improve.
Despite some potential player disappointment due to the loss of a long-available resource, Bungie will not provide compensation. However, before the new season arrives with changes, gamers can trade their Legendary Shards for desirable items at the Cryptarch's Materials Exchange.
