Aquaman 2: The Lost Kingdom has been making headlines for reportedly undergoing lengthy reshoots. Nevertheless, the film's director, James Wan, has negated these rumors in an interview with Empire Magazine. He revealed that despite speculations of three separate reshoot periods, the film only had a few days of reshoots, attributing the spread of the reshoots to the difficulty of getting the actors back after the initial shoot.
Earlier accounts suggested that the reshoots for the Aquaman sequel were triggered by lukewarm responses to early screenings. Borys Kit from The Hollywood Reporter mentioned it remained unclear what the issues were, but flimsy story clarity has been a persistent concern.
However, as per Wan, this is standard practice. He commented on how he doesn't believe in adhering strictly to the original plan, but prefers to let the art evolve organically.
A report from Variety disclosed some backstage drama surrounding the DC sequel. The report claimed that co-star Jason Momoa tried to get Amber Heard (who plays Mera in the film) fired from the project. The origins of this claim include documents procured from the Johnny Depp-Heard defamation trial and then published online. The report further stated that despite Momoa's supposed efforts, Heard was not fired, allegedly due to interference from Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who was dating her at that time.
Both Warner Bros. and Momoa’s representatives were contacted for responses regarding these allegations. A DC spokesperson defended Momoa stating he was professional on-set, while another source claimed Momoa wasn't emulating Depp's style, but embodying his own bohemian fashion sense.
Aquaman 2: The Lost Kingdom underwent scrutiny under other news reports during the summer, revealing the film endured three reshoot periods amidst confusion over Batman’s role in the film. Despite such rumors, the movie is reported to have cost $215 million, and expectations are high for it to replicate the financial success of its predecessor.
The film, which is hopefully set to hit the theaters on December 20, 2023, comes amid concerns over the brand's box office strength, in light of underperforming DCEU films.
