Disney's Marvel Gaming Universe: A Missed Opportunity

Mar 19, 2025 1:21 PM

The concept of a "Marvel Gaming Universe," akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was once in the works but ultimately never received funding from Disney. This idea was discussed by former Bungie co-founder Alexander Seropian and Marvel Rivals writer Alex Irvine in a recent podcast, where they expressed their frustrations over the initiative not moving forward. They envisioned a gaming universe that would tie together various Marvel games, allowing players to cross-over characters and lore, but complex storytelling questions led Disney executives to back away from the plan. Although this Marvel Gaming Universe didn’t materialize, the popularity of Marvel Rivals remains strong, attracting over 40 million players.

What was the Marvel Gaming Universe concept?

The Marvel Gaming Universe was a proposed initiative to create a cohesive universe similar to the MCU, linking various Marvel video games. Unfortunately, the concept was quashed by Disney due to complex storytelling challenges.

Marvel has a long history in entertainment, spanning decades in comics and film. The gaming world has also seen various adaptations, with standout titles like Insomniac's Spider-Man franchise and upcoming games like Marvel's Wolverine. The interconnected nature of these games, if realized in a unified gaming universe, could have offered players an expansive and enriched experience, affirming Marvel's prevalence across multimedia platforms.

A Marvel Gaming Universe could've been a game-changer, but it’s probably for the best—forcing interconnected stories might’ve stifled the creativity we’re seeing in standalone titles like Spider-Man and Wolverine. Sometimes, less structure means more room for innovation.

It’s wild to think how close we came to a Marvel Gaming Universe—imagine the potential for crossovers and shared lore Still, with games like Spider-Man and Wolverine killing it, maybe Marvel’s gaming future is better off staying flexible and letting each title shine on its own.
