"Dune," one of the most anticipated releases on HBO Max in 2021, will soon be debuting on Netflix according to a recent Twitter announcement. The film, a product of Denis Villeneuve, is expected to land on the streaming platform on October 1. However, it is yet unclear if this rollout will be limited to Netflix U.S, or extended to other international regions.
"Dune" has enjoyed an unconventional journey across streaming platforms. It was among several films, including "Mortal Kombat," "The Suicide Squad," "Godzilla vs. Kong," and "The Matrix Resurrections," that got caught up in the shakeup of the film industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to lockdown measures, Warner Bros. adopted a simultaneous release tactic in 2020, simultaneously launching their entire 2021 film catalogue in theatres and on HBO Max. Though these movies originally had a one month stay on HBO Max before rotating to theatre exclusivity and eventually home entertainment, they have since returned to HBO Max permanently.
Despite its current availability on HBO Max, "Dune" is set for a Netflix release, likely aimed at enhancing viewership before the sequel is unveiled.
In related news, the film's sequel, "Dune: Part 2" was recently postponed from November 3, 2023, to March 15, 2024, by Warner Bros. Originally slated as one of the grand releases of the fall, the studio elected to delay it owing to the ongoing Hollywood actors’ strike, which would likely prevent prominent actors such as Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya from participating in the promotional circuit amidst the strike.
