EA's Axed Black Panther Game Planned to Revamp Nemesis System

Jun 02, 2025 11:30 AM

EA recently canceled its innovative single-player Black Panther game, which was in development by Cliffhanger Studios. The game sought to expand on the popular Nemesis System from Monolith's Shadow of Mordor. It featured multiple playable characters, including T’Challa, Killmonger, and Shuri, who would compete for the title of Black Panther while interacting with each other as rivals. Additionally, the game included Skrull enemies attempting to invade Wakanda, with mechanics allowing them to remember player actions and adapt accordingly. Despite some promising early progress, delays and creative challenges ultimately led to the game's cancellation and the studio's closure. Meanwhile, EA continues to work on an Iron Man game and Amy Hennig's Black Panther title, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, remains in production.

What were the main features of the canceled Black Panther game?

The canceled Black Panther game was designed to incorporate the Nemesis System, allowing players to interact with characters like T’Challa and Killmonger while competing for the title of Black Panther. It also featured Skrull enemies invading Wakanda, who could remember player interactions, enhancing the gameplay experience.

Black Panther is set in the Marvel Universe and is based on the popular comic series that showcases the adventures of T’Challa, the king of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. The character has gained immense popularity through the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially with the critical and commercial success of the Black Panther film directed by Ryan Coogler in 2018. The game's cancellation leaves Marvel fans looking forward to other upcoming titles featuring the beloved superhero, ensuring that the spirit of Wakanda continues in new gaming experiences.

It’s a shame we’ll never see Wakanda’s dynamic throne wars play out in-game, especially with the Nemesis System adding that extra layer of drama. Here’s hoping the Iron Man title and Marvel 1943 can fill the void without feeling like consolation prizes. (Kept it light but insightful, focused on the unique gameplay potential we lost, and subtly compared it to upcoming projects.)

Man, losing that Nemesis System in Wakanda stings—imagine the rivalries and Skrull shenanigans we’ll never get to experience. At least we’ve still got Iron Man and Amy Hennig’s project to look forward to, but this one had serious potential. (Kept it casual, acknowledged the bummer without being repetitive, and nodded to other Marvel games in the pipeline.)
