The Finals developer, Embark Studios, has addressed concerns regarding their use of AI for voiceovers in the game. In response to criticism from voice actors and developers, the studio has denied that eliminating actors is their ultimate objective. On the contrary, they have noted that both recorded audio voices and AI-generated text-to-speech are utilized depending on the game context.
While they admit to having used AI "in a few instances", the company points out that certain sounds - such as breathing noises - cannot be replicated by the AI and are recorded by the developers themselves. However, this sparked criticism, as the company originally stated these were not done by paid voice actors. Embark has now clarified that the open beta uses both professional voice actors and temporary voices from Embark employees. They further affirmed that TTS technology has introduced new ways of collaboration and is not a means to replace actors entirely.
The use of AI instead of actors has provoked controversy, resulting in strikes by the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and backlash from industry personnel. Several voice actors including Victoria Atkin from Assassin's Creed Syndicate and Paul Eiding from the Metal Gear Solid series have condemned the use of AI.
Despite the controversy surrounding Embark's use of AI, the game remains popular, attracting a peak of 267,874 concurrent players on Steam in its first weekend availability according to SteamDB data. Made by former DICE developers who worked on the Battlefield series, the team-based first person shooter hit its player capacity within days.
