Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Development in Question

Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors remained elusive regarding the current status of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) remake during a financial briefing. Despite the growing concerns among fans and the press, the leader of the gaming company chose not to disclose any details, leaving many to speculate on the future of the highly anticipated role-playing game.

The project initially faced setbacks when a demo from developer Aspyr, an Embracer subsidiary, supposedly did not meet the expectations of Lucasfilm and Sony. This disappointment led to an indefinite halt in the development, alongside the departure of the remake's art and design directors.

Following these events, the KOTOR remake was shifted to another Embracer studio, Saber Interactive, known for working on titles like World War Z and Space Marine 2. Aspyr had been developing the KOTOR remake for three years and had revealed its progress in Sony’s PlayStation Showcase in 2021, with the original voice actor Jennifer Hale set to return as Bastila Shan.

The KOTOR remake was advertised as a full rebuild for PC and PlayStation 5, promising a new take on one of the most celebrated Star Wars video games and western RPGs originally created by BioWare. Initially targeting a late 2022 release, insiders had suggested a more likely 2025 launch. Now, with the development change and lack of updates, the release timeline is uncertain.

Recently, concerns intensified when promotional content for the KOTOR remake was removed from Sony's channels, which Sony attributed to music licensing issues. Embracer's current restructuring involving significant layoffs and potential sales of some studios adds to the ambiguity surrounding the remake.

Gamers eagerly awaiting this classic RPG's return will have to stay tuned for any new developments or official announcements regarding the status of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake.
