Epic Games, the company behind the popular online video game Fortnite, has reportedly laid off about 900 employees, says a recent Bloomberg report.
This represents almost 16% of the company's workforce.
This information, yet to be confirmed by Epic Games or Fortnite's staff, was allegedly shared with staff via an internal memo immediately after global price increases for V-Bucks, Fortnite's in-game currency.
If the report is accurate, it'll be another blow to the tech sector, which has seen significant layoffs in 2023 from major companies like Microsoft and Riot Games.
Other sad news in the industry involves the closure of Volition by the Embracer Group after 30 years of operation, and Activision Blizard's layoffs following a company restructure.
SEGA has also recently cancelled a project called Hyenas, which might result in more job losses.
These job cuts and troubling industry events stand in stark contrast to the incredible games being launched this year.
This unsettling news comes just two days after Fortnite celebrated its sixth-year anniversary.
We all hope that those affected by the layoffs are able to bounce back soon.
