EUROPSE WINKELS STOPPEN MET INKOPEN XBOX-GAMES

Feb 01, 2024 3:00 PM

Recent reports indicate that several European retailers are considering halting the purchase of Xbox games due to declining sales of physical copies in the region. Christopher Dring of Games Industry mentioned in a recent podcast that Xbox is predominantly a digital console, with the majority of games being downloaded rather than purchased in physical form. This has led to a reduced incentive for retailers to stock Xbox games since the profit margins on console sales alone are minimal. The physical gaming sector for Xbox has already seen potential signs of shrinkage with Microsoft planning layoffs for around 1,900 employees, which includes divisions related to physical game distribution. Furthermore, evidence suggests Microsoft's development of a new Xbox Series X model without a disc drive. Amidst these changes, it was announced that the upcoming 'Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2', a first-party game, will be released digitally only.

Is the Xbox Series X moving away from physical game releases?

Yes, it appears the Xbox Series X is moving towards a more digital-centric approach with the development of a disc-less model and the digital-only release of first-party titles like 'Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2'.

'Senua's Saga: Hellblade II' is a sequel to the critically acclaimed 'Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice', developed by Ninja Theory, which is known for its deep storytelling and depiction of mental illness through the journey of its protagonist, Senua. Its release as a digital-only title aligns with the growing trend of digital distribution in the gaming industry, which Microsoft seems to be embracing with its Xbox platform's evolving strategies. This shift may also reflect broader industry trends where players increasingly prefer digital purchases for their convenience and immediacy.
