ex-EA devs create new studio for nba street spiritual successor

Jul 23, 2024 4:00 PM

Former EA developers have launched a new studio, Play by Play Studios, and announced their first project: The Run: Got Next. This 3v3 online basketball game is positioned as a spiritual successor to NBA Street, a popular street basketball series from the early 2000s. Developed using Unreal Engine 5, The Run: Got Next focuses on character-driven gameplay, embracing the style, skills, and attitude of streetball culture. Players will string together winning streaks in matches either solo or with friends online, with discussions ongoing about an offline mode. Unique characters, each with distinct strengths, weaknesses, and playstyles, will be a core element. The game will feature a shop for acquiring items, sponsors, and abilities between games. Despite not being free-to-play, there are no plans for gameplay-impacting microtransactions, although cosmetic items may be introduced later. Crossplay and cross-progression will be available, but it will not have couch co-op at launch. The game is expected to fill the void left by classic arcade sports games when it launches in 2025 for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.

What is The Run: Got Next?

The Run: Got Next is a 3v3 online basketball game by Play by Play Studios, developed as a spiritual successor to NBA Street. Featuring character-driven gameplay that celebrates streetball culture, it is built on Unreal Engine 5 and allows players to compete solo or with friends online.

NBA Street was a beloved series that brought the excitement and fast-paced action of street basketball to consoles in the early 2000s. Known for its over-the-top moves and stylized visuals, NBA Street captured the essence of streetball and differentiated itself from traditional basketball simulators. By offering a fresh take on the genre with The Run: Got Next, Play by Play Studios aims to revive the arcade sports spirit that has been missing in recent years.
