In a recent discussion, the production leads for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Tetsuya Nomura and Yoshinori Kitase, held diverging opinions regarding the term "JRPG". Earlier this year, the producer for Final Fantasy 14 and 16, Naoki Yoshida, described the term as distasteful and discriminatory, as it was initially used to negatively categorize games made in Japan. Agreeing with Yoshida, Nomura, the creative director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, expressed disapproval of the term, stating that it felt off and unnecessary because the games were previously only referred to as RPGs without the geographical prefix. He further questioned the reasoning and necessity behind the usage of "JRPG". However, Kitase, who is producing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, conveyed a different perspective. He didn't see the term as derogatory. He acknowledged that since the majority of current gaming titles are developed in the west, the term "JRPG" might simply serve to characterize the unique style or approach seen in games made in Japan. He emphasized that if this was the case, he was completely fine with the term. This dichotomy in perspectives underscores the importance of understanding how a term might be impacting a group differently. It urges the gaming community to reflect on whether the usage of such terms is indeed necessary. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth continues to generate excitement among fans, with the promise of delivering a game experience bigger and better than the highly-lauded Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
