"Firings at Bungie, Marathon and Destiny 2 DLC reportedly delayed"

Oct 31, 2023 8:45 AM

There have been a number of layoffs at Bungie, the studio behind popular games like "Marathon" and "Destiny 2." The layoffs followed Sony PlayStation's acquisition of the studio last year. Although the exact number of layoffs and specific individuals let go have not been disclosed, it's known that community manager Liana Ruppert and composer Michael Salvatori are among those affected.

The layoffs have reportedly impacted the planned release of the "Destiny 2" expansion, "The Final Shape," and the game "Marathon." Initially slated for February 2022, "The Final Shape" release has been pushed back to June, and "Marathon," initially aiming for a 2024 release, is now expected in 2025.

Sony PlayStation appears to be carrying out several layoff rounds within its studios. Other affected studios include "The Last of Us" studio Naughty Dog, PlayStation studios in San Diego, and "Dreams" developer MediaMolecule. These follow reports of layoffs at other game industry companies such as Team17, the team behind "Hearthstone," Epic Games, CD Projekt Red, Microsoft, Ubisoft, Bioware, Telltale, and Crystal Dynamics.

There have also been notable departures among top-level executives in gaming companies, including Jim Ryan leaving Sony PlayStation and Pete Hines departing Bethesda.
