Former employees of Bioware, the game studio behind franchises such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age, have taken legal action against the company seeking improved severance pay. Roughly 50 people were laid off from the studio last August, under the intention of maintaining high quality work and agile adaptation to the fast-paced industry, as announced by the company.
Seven former employees, who reportedly spent an average of 14 years with the company, filed a lawsuit in Alberta's court. They claim that the customary severance pay — one month's salary for each year of service — was not given. Furthermore, these employees have faced difficulties in finding new employment as they cannot include their recent work on the upcoming Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in their portfolios.
There is uncertainty surrounding the release of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf as no official gameplay has been revealed yet, despite early images being leaked earlier this year. The laid-off employees voiced their struggle with Bioware's decision to treat them this way during challenging times, yet remain optimistic about the game they devoted so much work to. As of now, it's also known that a new Mass Effect game is in works.
