Ingrid Alm, the former HR manager at Bungie, is suing the game developer, claiming wrongful termination, according to reports from IGN.
Alm began working at Bungie, the company behind Destiny, in May 2022 and was tasked with investigating an employee's performance a few months later. The employee in question was named 'James Smith' in the lawsuit documents.
Alm alleges that Smith, who was reportedly the only person of color on a team of 50, felt he was being unfairly treated because of his race. When Alm addressed this issue with the respective manager and suggested diversity training, it was disregarded, leading to a hostile response. Bungie allegedly advised firing Smith, which Alm did not agree with, considering Smith's experiences.
In an attempt to find a solution, Alm consulted Courtney Benjamin, a Bungie employee who oversees company inclusivity. Benjamin advised issuing Smith with a written warning only. Alm, however, received a written warning herself after her manager was irate that she had contacted Benjamin.
Later that month, Alm was suggested to seek new employment during a performance review and her email access was abruptly cut off. She was then informed that her resignation was accepted although she had not expressed any intention to resign.
Bungie denies these allegations but hasn't provided further context about the situation. The company, known for reports of a toxic workplace culture, including racism and sexism, was acquired by Sony PlayStation early last year.
The former HR manager's lawsuit unfolds further as the legal proceedings continue.
