Renowned video game developer and ex-executive VP at PlatinumGames, Hideki Kamiya, has branched out onto YouTube after exiting the company in September. Following his departure, Kamiya mentioned he would be out of the gaming industry for a year "due to reasons", implying he might be under a non-compete agreement.
In the inaugural video on his channel, Kamiya walks viewers through leaving the PlatinumGames office, explains his reasons for doing so, and shares glimpses of his life after the exit, which includes making curry and watching TV.
Kamiya has had an illustrious career, directing successful titles like Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry while at Capcom, and leading projects such as Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101 at PlatinumGames. His decision to leave PlatinumGames wasn't explained in detail but he shared that he wanted to follow his beliefs as a game creator.
Assuring fans he isn't retiring, Kamiya teased that he'll be open to job offers reaching over ¥100 million (about $670,000) annually once the no-work period ends. He concluded the video humorously, driving to the "unemployment centre" in a supercar.
His new YouTube endeavor will feature content "completely education free" and unrelated to gaming. It seems like Kamiya is taking a break from his 30-year long game industry career. Meanwhile, PlatinumGames will continue without Kamiya.
Kamiya's anticipated game Project G.G., teased as his next major venture, will go forward. According to Kamiya, fans can expect it to surpass previous titles like The Wonderful 101: Remastered and Sol Cresta in scale.
