Ransomware Group Behind Capcom's Massive Leak Arrested
A cybercriminal group responsible for a significant data breach at Capcom in late 2020 has been apprehended, according to an announcement by the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol). The ransomware group in question, known as Ragnar Locker, had orchestrated a mass leak of personal data and prematurely revealed information about upcoming Capcom games, including Street Fighter 6 and the Resident Evil 4 Remake.
As reported by VideoGamesChronicle, the investigation culminated last week with the arrest of a "key target" from the group in Paris. Further, law enforcement from 11 different nations collaborated in this action. A subsequent inspection was carried out at the suspect's residence in Czechia. Additional suspects located in Spain and Latvia were questioned as part of the operation, confirmed by Europol.
Edvardas Šileris, the head of Europol's European Cybercrime Centre, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in taking down ransomware operations. He issued a warning that despite improved security measures, these cybercriminals continue to innovate and discover new targets.
During the data breach in 2020, Capcom acknowledged that 16,415 individuals were affected and that critical financial data and sales reports were exposed. Shortly after disclosing the hack, Capcom, as independently verified by IGN, identified that the stolen data contained information about unannounced games planned for the next several years.
