Guillermo del Toro and Christopher Nolan Advocate for Physical Media Ownership
Filmmakers Guillermo del Toro and Christopher Nolan have recently voiced their support for physical media in light of films being pulled from streaming platforms. Nolan spoke about the importance of owning a physical copy and the security it brings, compared to the transient nature of digital distribution.
Warner Bros. faced criticism for removing several HBO Max originals, as well as the non-release of completed films like 'Batgirl' and 'Scoob! Holiday Haunt.' Nolan expressed concerns about the absence of film releases in physical formats, fearing that movies available only on streaming services could become inaccessible if removed.
Del Toro equated owning physical media to a form of custodianship for future generations, highlighting the importance of preserving films we love in tangible forms like 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD formats. In the context of these discussions, Nolan is promoting the physical release of his film 'Oppenheimer' which features an array of special features.
This emphasis on physical ownership comes at a time when the stability and permanence of digital content are being questioned, positioning physical media as a crucial element for ensuring the longevity and retention of creative works.
