Hi-Rez Studios has announced layoffs as the MOBA sequel, Smite 2, faces challenges during its early access phase. CEO Stewart Chisam revealed that changes in strategy are prompted by the need for a sustainable future for the game. The studio is redirecting its focus from cosmetic features and marketing to enhancing gameplay, as it aims for a full free-to-play launch in 2025. Early access, which began on August 27, has seen mixed reception, with only 55% positive reviews on Steam and dwindling player numbers.
