US President Joe Biden has taken proactive measures to regulate the usage of generative Artificial Intelligence by signing an executive order. The order aims to provide a suitable framework for the safe development and implementation of the technology. Several government agencies have now been assigned the task of creating preventive standards related to the use of AI for developing biological materials. Further, they are to establish practices to recognize and keep American citizens safe against fraudulent and deceptive practices driven by AI, and guarantee the ethical and efficient use of AI by the government. Additionally, it was highlighted that the Administration will cooperate with international allies to establish a robust global framework to regulate AI development and usage.

This step by the Biden Administration follows the significant growth of the AI technology field observed over the last year. In September, the administration unveiled an AI 'Bill of Rights', outlining some basic principles for AI developers to adhere to. As part of this initiative, they roped in multiple major tech companies, such as Google and Nvidia, who pledged to develop AI in a responsible manner. Plans to control AI usage extend to a wide array of industries, including the gaming and entertainment sector. At present, the Senate has not passed any laws to regulate the technology, but Senator Richard Blumenthal has expressed hopes of passing AI-specific legislation by year-end.
