President Joe Biden has signed an executive order that will oversee the evolution and application of artificial intelligence (AI) under newly established industrial standards. Among other details, these standards will require AI developers to share test results concerning safety with the government.
The President's encounters with AI, including frequent excessive exposure to deepfake images of himself on the internet, have evoked both intrigue and concern. This, along with an unnerving experience with voice cloning technology, has raised his apprehensions regarding AI.
Biden's views on AI were further disturbed when he watched Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, a movie featuring a sentient AI wreaking havoc. The movie made Biden even more conscious about the potential downsides of AI technology.
The latest executive order, according to the White House, stands as the most comprehensive action ever taken to safeguard Americans from the probable risks posed by AI systems. The order acknowledges the potential of AI while cautioning against its irresponsible use that could exacerbate societal harms and pose threats to national security.
Although the effectuation of the executive order's actions will take place over the span of 90 to 365 days, the second part of the aforementioned movie will only be premiered in summer 2025 following production delays.
