Kazuma Kiryu’s Actor Voiced as “Sexiest” by Mascot Agency

Feb 11, 2025 4:00 PM

Kaizen Game Works, the developer behind "Promise Mascot Agency," has cast Takaya Kuroda, the actor famous for voicing Kazuma Kiryu, as the game's Yakuza protagonist Michi. Despite the similarities that might draw comparisons to the "Yakuza" series, the team emphasizes their goal isn't to replicate that iconic franchise. They were initially concerned that Kuroda's involvement could lead to accusations of imitation. However, they ultimately chose Kuroda due to his exceptional voice, integrating his experience into their unique narrative. Michi's character development diverges from Kiryu's, presenting a more naïve, insular figure who must confront the realities of his Yakuza lifestyle.

What makes Michi different from Kazuma Kiryu?

Michi is portrayed as younger and more naïve compared to Kiryu. While Kiryu carries a stoic demeanor, Michi is more oblivious to the complexities of his Yakuza life, reflecting a character borne from different writing influences.

Both "Like a Dragon" and "Yakuza" are series created by SEGA that deal with crime dramas in an open-world setting. "Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth," the latest installment from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, continues this legacy while exploring new character dynamics and themes, similar yet distinct from the Yakuza saga. Fans are particularly excited since next year also marks the 20th anniversary of the Yakuza series, promising a flood of new announcements and events celebrating this beloved franchise.

It’s refreshing to see Takaya Kuroda step into a role that lets him flex his vocal chops in a completely new direction, especially with Michi’s more sheltered and inexperienced vibe compared to Kiryu’s hardened stoicism. This could be a great way to introduce Kuroda’s talent to a new audience while keeping longtime fans intrigued by the contrast.

It’s cool to see Takaya Kuroda bring his iconic voice to a fresh character like Michi, especially with such a different personality from Kiryu. This feels like a smart move to honor his legacy while carving out a new narrative space for fans to explore.
