Leak triggers cancelation of Damien Wayne Batman game

Jan 23, 2024 1:20 PM

The gaming community has been buzzing with the revelation that WB Games Montréal's Damien Wayne Batman game was cancelled due to significant leaks. Voice actor Josh Keaton, known for his role as Anduin Wrynn in Warcraft, disclosed during a Twitch livestream that his portrayal of Damian Wayne in the title was scrapped when crucial details of the game surfaced online, leading to the project's demise. The leaks, which provided in-depth knowledge of the plot, villains, and redesigned concept art, were cited as the primary reason for the cancellation. Furthermore, this Batman game was clarified to be distinct from the Arkhamverse, representing a fresh take on the superhero narrative.

The now-shelved Damien Wayne Batman game followed the discontinuation of an earlier Suicide Squad game by WB Games Montréal in 2016. Despite the setback, the development studio later released Gotham Knights in 2022, though the title experienced difficulty in securing a sizable player base. Meanwhile, Batman Arkham creators Rocksteady Studios proceeded with their development of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is nearing its launch.

Details surrounding the canceled game included an older Bruce Wayne and a dystopian Gotham City. Notably, the Batcycle, which was to be a central gameplay feature in the canceled project, managed to make its way into Gotham Knights. Currently, Warner Bros. has not yet announced the next project from WB Games Montréal.

What became of the WB Montreal's Damian Wayne Batman game?

The Damian Wayne Batman game by WB Games Montréal was canceled after extensive leaks revealed significant parts of the game, rendering the continuation of the development process unviable.

Background context on this situation involves the Batman game franchise history. These titles are highly anticipated due to the critical and commercial success of the Batman: Arkham series, developed by Rocksteady Studios, which set a high standard for superhero video games with its engaging combat, deep narrative, and immersive portrayal of Gotham City. WB Games Montréal had previously worked on Batman: Arkham Origins, a prequel to the original trilogy. The Arkham series created a fervent fan base eager for more experiences within that universe. Gotham Knights, though not part of the Arkham series, aimed to continue that legacy, albeit with a focus on characters other than Batman himself.
