Lego Cancels Impressive Bionicle Fan Project After 8 Years

May 19, 2025 12:24 PM

Lego has ceased the development of the ambitious fan project "Bionicle: Masks of Power," which had been in the works for eight years by Team Kanohi. The open-world action RPG was inspired by the beloved Bionicle series and drew comparisons to games like Horizon: Zero Dawn. Despite the significant hype and quality of the development, Lego requested that the project be completely shut down, suggesting it may have been mistaken for official merchandise. The developers expressed disappointment but shared plans to begin a new venture called Project Rustbound as they pivot to create an original game.

Why did Lego shut down Bionicle: Masks of Power?

Lego likely shut down the project due to its polished appearance potentially causing confusion with official products, as well as the possibility of preparing to release their own Bionicle game.

The Bionicle franchise has a rich history, originally launched in 2001, which combines storytelling with collectible toys. Bionicle has a dedicated fan base that has been eagerly waiting for new content, making the shutdown of "Bionicle: Masks of Power" a significant disappointment for fans. This action RPG aimed to revive interest in the series while maintaining the essence that originally captivated audiences. With the developers transitioning to “Unmasked Games,” there is anticipation around their next project as they seek to innovate outside the confines of the Lego universe.

Man, it's a bummer to see such a passionate fan project get axed, but you can't blame Lego for protecting their IP—hopefully Project Rustbound brings that same energy to something fresh. At least the devs are rolling with the punches and keeping the creativity alive
