Media Molecule confirms layoffs within the company

Oct 25, 2023 9:46 AM

PlayStation developer Media Molecule, known for games like LittleBigPlanet and Dreams, has confirmed layoffs within the company. The specifics of the layoffs - such as the number of employees let go - are currently undisclosed. The company cites significant strategic changes as they shift focus from ongoing support for Dreams to a new, unnamed project.

Moreover, there have been reports of layoffs from other PlayStation studios based in San Diego—Sony San Diego Studio and Visual Arts. Unfortunately, the gaming industry has seen a surge in layoffs this year, including Naughty Dog employees' contracts being terminated earlier than expected, layoffs at Team17 and the team behind Hearthstone, and other substantial workforce reductions at Epic Games, CD Projekt Red, and Microsoft.

Additionally, top executives have been stepping down from high-ranking positions within several companies. Jim Ryan announced his departure from Sony PlayStation, and Pete Hines is also leaving Bethesda, among other notable exits. These changes show a significant shift and uncertain times within the gaming industry.
