Microsoft Shuts Down Skype, Replacing It with Free Teams
Feb 28, 2025 2:28 PMMicrosoft has announced that Skype will officially shut down in May, marking the end of an era for the once-dominant voice over IP service. Users will transition to a free version of Microsoft Teams, and current Skype users can seamlessly migrate their content, including message histories and contacts, without needing to create a new account. However, the shift means that domestic and international calling capabilities via Skype will be phased out. Users have a 60-day window to export their Skype data before the service goes offline. Microsoft attributes the shutdown to changing usage trends and the increasing prevalence of alternatives like WhatsApp and Zoom.
What happens to my Skype data after the shutdown? After the shutdown, users can export their Skype data, including conversation history and photos. Microsoft provides a tool to assist users in viewing their Skype chat history if they choose not to migrate to Teams.
Skype was acquired by Microsoft for $8.5 billion in 2011 and played a significant role in video and voice communications. At its peak, Skype boasted over 160 million active users, integrating seamlessly with Windows devices and Xbox consoles. However, its user base has stagnated in recent years, prompting Microsoft to refocus its efforts on Teams as a more suitable platform for modern communication needs.
