Monster Hunter Wilds on Steam Deck This Mod Might Help

Mar 04, 2025 10:19 AM

Players eager to dive into Monster Hunter Wilds on their Steam Deck might face some frustrating technical challenges. A new mod available on Nexus Mods, titled "The Little Engine that Shouldn't - Steam Deck config (OLED)," aims to help optimize the game's performance on this handheld device. Despite being designed to improve frame rates, players should still expect visual downgrades and performance hiccups. The mod promises around 30FPS, with occasional dips even boasting options for a 45FPS cap, though players should manage their expectations regarding graphics quality. The modder behind this config advises against purchasing Monster Hunter Wilds solely for the Steam Deck, suggesting that dedicated fans might still wish to experiment despite the limitations.

Can Monster Hunter Wilds run well on Steam Deck?

While a mod exists to help improve its performance, Monster Hunter Wilds is not recommended for the Steam Deck due to significant visual and technical issues, although die-hard fans might still find value in experimenting with the game on this platform.

Monster Hunter Wilds is a part of the acclaimed Monster Hunter series developed by Capcom, where players take on the role of hunters in vibrant ecosystems filled with fantastic creatures. It has gained popularity for its strategic combat and vast exploration, though it has faced criticism for its technical issues on various platforms, making mods like the one discussed particularly significant for the community.

It's always impressive to see the modding community come through with creative solutions, but it’s a shame that Wilds still feels like it’s fighting the Steam Deck’s hardware more than the monsters. Hopefully, Capcom takes note and gives handheld players some love in future updates, but for now, it’s a hunt at your own risk kind of deal.

It's cool to see the modding community stepping up to tackle the Steam Deck's performance woes, but it’s a bummer that Wilds still feels like a square peg in a round hole for handheld play. Maybe Capcom will drop some official optimizations down the line, but for now, it’s a proceed with caution situation for Steam Deck hunters.
