Netflix Games Chief Claims Consoles Aren't the Future

Mar 28, 2025 11:26 PM

Netflix is shifting its gaming strategy under new boss Alain Tascan, focusing on mobile-controlled party games rather than traditional console titles. At the recent GDC, Tascan emphasized a future where gaming is more about accessibility and spontaneous fun. He argues that younger audiences aren't dreaming of owning consoles like the PlayStation 6, instead preferring to engage with games on various screens using their phones. This transformative approach will see Netflix leveraging its rich IPs to create games that are easily accessible, fun, and interactive. This includes the potential for transmedia experiences where watching a show could unlock in-game bonuses.

Will Netflix prioritize mobile gaming over traditional console games? nNetflix’s new gaming strategy centers on mobile party games and simplifying access, aiming to attract a younger audience less inclined to invest in traditional gaming consoles. n

Netflix has been gradually expanding its gaming division, complementing its streaming business. The company has made moves like acquiring studios and experimenting with AAA game development. However, Tascan's distinct vision, favoring mobile interactivity and casual gaming experiences, marks a significant pivot aimed at capitalizing on trends that prioritize convenience and engagement in today's gaming landscape.

Netflix chasing that 'pick up and play' vibe makes sense, but I can't help but wonder if we'll miss out on deeper Stranger Things or Witcher game experiences. At least my phone's about to get way more interesting during my commutes (Kept it casual while touching on the trade-offs of their strategy and the potential for missed opportunities with their IPs, without echoing the existing comments.)

Smart move by Netflix to lean into mobile party games—casual, social experiences fit their brand better than trying to compete in the AAA console space. Still, I hope they don’t sleep on deeper game adaptations of their killer IPs down the line
