Feb 22, 2025 11:30 AM

Netflix has officially acquired the rights to adapt the martial arts brawler game Sifu into a live-action film. The project, which was first announced in 2022, will see Derek Kolstad, known for his work on the John Wick series, directing the film. T.S. Nowlin, who penned the Maze Runner films, is attached to write the screenplay. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the film is expected to follow the game's narrative, where the protagonist seeks revenge for his father's death while utilizing a unique magic mechanic that affects his aging. While no release date has been provided, the film remains in development alongside a notable production team, including members from John Wick's 87Eleven Entertainment.

What is the plot of the Sifu game and its film adaptation?

The plot of Sifu revolves around a child of a martial arts master, who embarks on a quest for vengeance after his father's murder. Throughout the journey, he confronts various adversaries and uses a magical talisman that allows him to return to life, albeit at the cost of aging. The film adaptation is expected to maintain this core storyline, bringing the game's intense martial arts action to a broader audience.

Sifu, developed by Sloclap, is acclaimed for its challenging gameplay and unique mechanics, which require players to learn from their defeats and adapt to increasingly difficult encounters. The game has gained a substantial following since its release and stands out for integrating its narrative seamlessly with its innovative combat system. The anticipated film seeks to capture the essence of this beloved game and offer a fresh interpretation to fans and newcomers alike.

I’m cautiously optimistic about this adaptation—Derek Kolstad’s John Wick pedigree gives me hope for some killer fight scenes, but translating Sifu’s aging mechanic into a film is going to be a real challenge. If they pull it off, though, this could be one of the rare game-to-movie adaptations that actually works.
