Netflix Team Hopeful as BioShock Movie Remains in Writing Stage, They All Adore It

Oct 19, 2023 12:35 PM

The much-anticipated movie adaptation of BioShock, produced by Netflix, is still in the writing phase, according to screenwriter Michael Green in a recent interview with Collider. Despite facing delays due to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, Green conveyed an optimistic outlook on the project, attributing this positive attitude to the enduring enthusiasm of Netflix before and after the strike. "Netflix has been amazing about it. They were excited about it before the strike, they're excited about it now, post-strike," Green said.

Since the ending of the strike, Green has been actively engaged with director Francis Lawrence and his team to formulate a sophisticated draft of the film. Although concrete details regarding the nature of the film –whether it's an adaptation, a canonical prequel, or something else– have been sparse since its original announcement in February 2022, Lawrence, renowned for directing The Hunger Games, ensured it would be "really true to the game itself."

The BioShock game, released in 2007, is acclaimed as one of the greatest in the gaming world, as players navigate the chaotic landscape of an underwater city initially intended as a utopia for the world's top intellects. Given the game's reputation, the film adaptation, therefore, carries high expectations. Green, recognized for his work on Logan and Blade Runner 2049, joined the film project in August 2022 and hinted at his anticipation to bring this "great big sprawling nightmare world" to the screen.
