NetherRealm Drops Mortal Kombat 1 Support for Future Project

May 24, 2025 12:32 PM

NetherRealm has officially announced that they will cease support for Mortal Kombat 1, with no further DLC characters or story chapters set to be released. The studio cited the need to concentrate on their next project, although fans are left disappointed by the end of additional content. Mortal Kombat 1 will continue to receive balance adjustments and fixes to improve gameplay. This announcement comes shortly after the launch of Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, which bundles the base game with expansions and extra content. Priced at £55/$70, this edition includes enhancements as well as updates like Animality finishing moves.

What does the end of Mortal Kombat 1 support mean for players?

The termination of support means that players will not see any more new characters or story expansions, which many fans were eagerly anticipating. However, the game will receive ongoing balance updates, so competitive play will still receive attention from the developers.

Mortal Kombat 1 is part of the legendary fighting game franchise that has captivated players since its debut in the early 90s. Following its 2023 reboot, it gained significant attention for its various expansions and additional in-game content, positioning it as a strong contender in the fighting game genre. The anticipated next project from NetherRealm is thought to be Injustice 3, which could pave the way for more superhero-themed fighting gameplay in the future.

Shame to see MK1’s DLC train end so soon, but I’m low-key excited to see what NetherRealm cooks up next—hopefully it’s got the same punch as their past hits. At least the balance tweaks mean the kombat isn’t over just yet

Bummer about no more DLC, but at least the competitive scene will stay fresh with balance updates. Here’s hoping NetherRealm’s next project brings the same hype as MK1 did Kinda wild they’re moving on already, but hey, if this means Injustice 3 is next, I’m totally here for it. Superhero fatalities, anyone
