New Ghostbusters Animated Series on Netflix: Old Fans Disheartened

Aug 13, 2024 9:13 AM

Netflix has announced a new animated Ghostbusters series that promises to differ significantly from the beloved 1980s original, The Real Ghostbusters. The project, which has been in development since at least 2022, will be overseen by writer and executive producer Elliott Kalan, known for his work on Mystery Science Theater 3000. This new series is set to adopt a 3D animation style, departing from the classic 2D aesthetic, and will bear a tone reminiscent of the more recent Ghostbusters films, specifically Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. These connections are underscored by the involvement of Afterlife co-writers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan as executive producers. Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a box office success, grossing $204 million, though its follow-up, Frozen Empire, fell short with $202 million on a larger budget. Fans of The Real Ghostbusters may find themselves disappointed as anticipation builds for this updated franchise entry.

What is the new Ghostbusters animated series about?

The new Ghostbusters animated series, featuring 3D animation and a tone aligned with the latest films, is currently in development with a focus on modern storytelling compared to the classic series.

Ghostbusters originally debuted in 1984, becoming a cultural phenomenon that not only spawned a highly successful film but also animated adaptations, comics, and merchandise. The Real Ghostbusters ran from 1986 to 1991 and was renowned for capturing the humor and spirit of the original film. The franchise saw a revival with the release of Ghostbusters (2016) and the successful sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), which bridged old and new generations of fans.

It’s exciting to see the Ghostbusters franchise getting a fresh take in animated form, especially with a 3D style that could attract a new generation of fans. However, it'll be interesting to see how long-time fans of the original series react to this shift in tone and aesthetic.

I love seeing classic franchises get a fresh take, but I'm curious how fans of the original Ghostbusters will react to this shift in style and tone. It seems like a gamble that could either breathe new life into the series or alienate its nostalgic base—guess we’ll just have to wait and see

It's always exciting to see classic franchises like Ghostbusters getting a fresh take, but I wonder how die-hard fans of the original series will react to this shift in style and tone. With the involvement of some skilled writers from the more recent films, it’s a gamble that could either inject new life into the lore or alienate the nostalgia-driven audience.
