Nintendo is reportedly developing games for the Switch for the fiscal year ending in March 2025, said Shuntaro Furukawa, President of Nintendo.
This comes amidst rumors of a potential Switch 2 release in the latter half of 2024. Furukawa confirmed the current main focus is on the current-edition Switch. Despite the buzz around a new console, Nintendo is keen to continue supporting the existing platform until 2025 at least.
"We are continuing to work on software for the Switch for the fiscal year ending 31 March 2025,” said Furukawa.
The rumored Switch successor is expected to uphold the current hybrid form when it comes out. However, the company hasn't revealed much about the new release yet. It's anticipated that in the second half of next year, the main focus may shift to the rumored Switch successor.
Nintendo's current plan is to maintain the momentum of successful franchises like "Zelda" and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." The focus is not only on first-time buyers, but also on those who wish to purchase a secondary or replacement Switch.
Furukawa’s comments don’t rule out the possibility that these games might also be playable on the new console, as backwards compatibility is usually anticipated in such instances. The decision to continue producing games for the current generation Switch makes sense, given its large existing customer base.
This fall, fans can look forward to games such as "Super Mario Bros. Wonder," "Super Mario RPG" remake, and "WarioWare: Move It" on Nintendo Switch. On 22 March 2024, "Princess Peach Showtime" will be released. In 2024, "Luigi's Mansion 2 HD" and a reissue of "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door" are also planned for release.
