Nintendo Switch 2 Won't Play Original Switch Games Natively

Apr 04, 2025 11:54 AM

Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2 console will not be natively compatible with original Switch games due to hardware differences. While initially expected to allow seamless backward compatibility, developers revealed that the compatibility was a lower priority compared to performance enhancements. The team has implemented a workaround that includes a mix of emulator technology and hardware features, but not all games may run perfectly. One game may not be playable, and some titles require original Joy-Con controllers. Nintendo is dedicated to improving compatibility before the console’s launch this summer.

Will the Nintendo Switch 2 be backwards compatible with all original Switch games?

Not all original Switch games will run perfectly on the Nintendo Switch 2. While most titles will be playable thanks to a new workaround, developers noted that some may experience issues and at least one game is deemed completely unplayable on the new console.

The Nintendo Switch revolutionized portable gaming when it launched in 2017, becoming a major player in the console market with its unique hybrid design. As Nintendo transitions to the Switch 2, they aim to retain the core gaming experience while integrating advanced technology, promising significant performance upgrades which fans are eagerly anticipating.
