nintendo switch removes xtwitter, matches playstation and xbox

Jun 11, 2024 8:41 AM

The Nintendo Switch update 18.1.0 has recently been released, removing X/Twitter support from the Switch. This change aligns the Switch with PlayStation and Xbox, which also discontinued X/Twitter integration in 2023. The removal is attributed to the increased costs for business usage of X/Twitter’s API since Elon Musk took over the platform. This update also includes general stability improvements to enhance user experience. Notably, Nintendo has maintained integration with Facebook, which does not charge for API usage. X/Twitter had initially responded by emphasizing its commitment to the gaming community and its partnership with Nintendo, though that statement has since been deleted.

Why did Nintendo remove X/Twitter support from the Switch?

Nintendo removed X/Twitter support due to the increased costs associated with the platform’s API for business use, which could amount to around $42,000 a month.

Nintendo Switch, released in March 2017, revolutionized the gaming industry with its hybrid design, combining the convenience of a handheld device with the power of a home console. Over the years, it has seen various updates and iterations, including the Nintendo Switch Lite and the OLED model, which offers better visuals and improved battery life. Popular Switch games include "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," "Super Mario Odyssey," and "Animal Crossing: New Horizons," each helping to cement the console’s success.
