No Italian Voice Acting 2K Goes Full Sicilian in Mafia: The Old Country

Aug 22, 2024 9:07 AM

Mafia: The Old Country, the latest installment in the iconic Mafia franchise, is set in 1900s Sicily and will feature Sicilian voice acting instead of standard Italian. This decision by developer Hangar 13 emphasizes authenticity, as Sicilian is a distinct dialect with unique pronunciation and vocabulary. The game, announced at Gamescom 2024, is slated for a 2025 release and will also provide Italian language localization through subtitles and in-game UI.

Why is Mafia: The Old Country using Sicilian voice acting instead of Italian?

This choice was made by the developers to enhance the game's authenticity, reflecting the cultural and linguistic characteristics of 1900s Sicily. Sicilian is recognized as a separate dialect with significant differences from standard Italian.

Mafia: The Old Country expands the narrative of the beloved Mafia series, known for its in-depth storytelling and rich historical contexts. The franchise has previously explored various American mob stories, but this new chapter ventures into the roots of the Mafia in Sicily, promising a deeper dive into its origins and culture. Fans can expect a blend of historical accuracy and immersive gameplay, making for an engaging gaming experience.
