In the latest update about the popular upcoming heist shooter game, Payday 3, developer Starbreeze has announced that they will no longer use the controversial Denuvo DRM system. In a brief and direct post on the Steam platform, the team writes: "Hello heisters, we want to inform you that Denuvo is no longer in Payday 3. We look forward to seeing you in New York City!"

If you're unfamiliar with Denuvo, it's a type of anti-cheat and anti-piracy software. Although it makes games really difficult to hack or release illegally, many players dislike it. The main issues are its potential to infringe on user privacy—since it may technically access anything on a player's computer—and its reported negative impact on game performance.

For instance, Tekken's Katsuhiro Harada has publicly blamed Denuvo for the underwhelming performance of Tekken 7 on PCs. Until a few months ago, players were unaware that Payday 3 was supposed to incorporate Denuvo, so this decision by Starbreeze is a prompt and notable revision. Even more surprising, this change comes just under a week before the game's official release on September 21.

Remember, though, this would've only affected the PC version of the game, as Payday 3 will also be available for console players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
