Phil Spencer Reveals Why Doom: The Dark Ages Hits PS5

Jun 09, 2024 10:43 PM

In a recent Xbox Showcase, Phil Spencer confirmed the upcoming release of "Doom: The Dark Ages," which will also be available on PlayStation 5. Spencer explained that the decision to make this game multiplatform was influenced by id Software Studio Director Marty Stratton, who wanted Doom to be accessible on all platforms. "Doom: The Dark Ages" is set in a medieval-inspired dark fantasy world where players, as the Slayer, will combat demonic hordes in a gripping narrative involving gods, kings, and monsters. This move aligns with Xbox's strategy of extending its first-party titles to other consoles, a shift that started with the release of other exclusives like "Grounded," "Pentiment," "Hi-Fi Rush," and "Sea of Thieves" on rival platforms. The game is expected to release in 2025.

Why is "Doom: The Dark Ages" releasing on PlayStation 5?

The decision to release "Doom: The Dark Ages" on PlayStation 5 was influenced by id Software's Studio Director Marty Stratton, who expressed a desire to make the game accessible on all platforms. This aligns with Xbox's wider strategy to ensure the long-term success of both Xbox and the gaming industry.

The "Doom" series first launched in 1993 and has since been a pivotal franchise in the first-person shooter genre. Known for its intense gameplay and demonic themes, the series has remained influential, with successful reboots in recent years. "Doom: The Dark Ages," a prequel with a unique medieval twist, aims to expand its lore and appeal to both longtime fans and new players.
