James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli stated the team "hasn't even begun" the task of modernising the 007 franchise for the era post-Daniel Craig. The transition holds "a big road ahead" as Broccoli and her co-producer Michael G. Wilson wish to "reinvent" the character for the next era. The duo had aimed to portray a 21st-century hero with Craig's portrayal of the iconic character and will now start afresh to reinvent the character for the next era.
Broccoli underlined how the franchise previously successfully reinvented Bond at the time of the end of the cold war. During this period, many believed that the franchise had no further relevance, a notion proven incorrect. She emphasized how Craig "gave us the ability to mine the emotional life of the character".
Beyond this, she revealed the franchise's intent to expand through films, rather than TV spin-offs, despite the successful Bond-themed Prime Video series 007 Road to a Million. Broccoli stated, "Our focus is making the feature films...We make the Bond movies for the big theatrical screen... so we've not wanted to do television."
Craig retired from the role two years ago with his last film 'No Time to Die'. He initially signed to play the beloved character in 2005, making his debut in Casino Royale in 2006. Craig played Bond in Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012), and Spectre (2015). The next Bond film, for which producers are seeking a '30-something' actor to commit for at least a decade, is set to be a "complete reinvention" of the series.
Although Taron Egerton has declined the proposed role, various other names continue to circulate in the rumor mill regarding Craig's replacement. Directors Denis Villeneuve and Christopher Nolan have voiced interest in directing a 007 project, labelling the opportunity a "privilege". However, the challenge doesn’t come without its hurdles in this post-Craig era.
