PS VR2 production paused as Sony deals with warehouse issue

Mar 18, 2024 4:00 PM

The much-anticipated PlayStation VR2 seems to be facing significant sales challenges. Sony has reportedly ceased production due to an excess of unsold inventory. Despite the initial production of around two million units, the VR headset hasn't seen the expected demand. Market analysis indicates a decline in shipments every quarter since the PS VR2's launch. Still, industry experts anticipate a potential upturn in the VR market with an estimated growth of over 30% annually till 2028, suggesting a possible future rise in VR2 sales.

Competition is stiff with Meta's Quest series enjoying better sales, despite both companies grappling with limited content offerings for their hardware. The upcoming Apple Vision Pro could either exacerbate these issues or help catalyze market growth. Sony is exploring the option to expand PS VR2 compatibility with PC hardware, which may increase the appeal of the VR2 to a broader audience by allowing access to a larger library of titles.

Is the PlayStation VR2 compatible with PC games?

No, currently the PlayStation VR2 is not officially compatible with PC VR titles, but Sony is reportedly testing PC compatibility which if implemented could significantly expand its usability and gaming library.

The PS VR2 is the successor to the original PlayStation VR headset designed for use with the PlayStation 5. This latest iteration was intended to bring significant improvements in terms of resolution, field of view, and tracking capabilities with the aim of providing a more immersive and user-friendly virtual reality experience. Despite its advanced features, such as haptic feedback and eye-tracking technology, it faces the ongoing challenge of securing a steady stream of content to entice users, which is essential for mainstream VR adoption.
