PS5 Pro Won't Hit 60fps with GTA 6, Warns Tech Pros

Mar 20, 2024 12:33 PM

The PlayStation 5 Pro, expected to release in the fourth quarter of 2024, is anticipated to be a significant step up from the standard PS5, according to a recent specs leak verified by Digital Foundry. The PS5 Pro's CPU will feature a 'High CPU Frequency Mode', boosting it to 3.85GHz, a modest 10% increase over the current PS5. More strikingly, the new console will deliver much more powerful graphics capabilities, boasting 33.5 teraflops compared to the standard PS5’s 10.28 teraflops – a considerable leap that suggests an almost tripled graphical computational power.

Despite these enhancements, Digital Foundry casts doubt on whether the PS5 Pro will run upcoming titles like GTA 6 at 60fps, especially since no Grand Theft Auto game to date has launched with such an option. Rich Leadbetter from Digital Foundry explains that since the CPU largely governs game simulation, and the PS5 Pro’s CPU only sees a 10% improvement, unless Grand Theft Auto 6 includes a 60fps mode on the standard PS5, it is unlikely to do so on the Pro version.

The PS5 Pro is also touted to include advanced rendering features, allowing it to upscale 1080p games from the older PS5 to 4K with the new PSSR technology, assuming developers patch their games to support it. In terms of memory, it will match the PS5's 16GB of GDDR6 memory, with a small increase in system RAM for developers.

Following Sony's pattern of releasing 'Pro' versions of their consoles a few years into the lifecycle, as seen with the PS4 Pro, the PS5 Pro's launch would come four years after the PS5 hit the shelves. Amidst this backdrop, Sony has scaled back its PS5 sales forecast and announced some corporate restructuring, including layoffs and the impending closure of its London studio.

Can the PS5 Pro run games in 4K resolution?

Yes, the PS5 Pro is expected to upscale lower resolution games to 4K using its PSSR upscaling/antialiasing technology, provided the games receive support through a developer's patch.

Grand Theft Auto VI, or GTA 6, is one of the most highly anticipated upcoming video games, developed by Rockstar Games. The Grand Theft Auto series has a storied history, beginning in 1997, and has since become one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. The previous entry, GTA 5, launched in 2013, has been one of the company’s most successful releases, with a persistent online mode that has helped maintain its popularity through the years.
