PS5 Sales Drop This Year, Sony Confirms Shocking Figures

Aug 07, 2024 10:14 AM

The PlayStation 5 has reported a decline in sales, achieving 61.7 million units sold since its launch in 2020. Recent financial results showed a drop from 3.3 million units sold in the first quarter of the 2024 fiscal year to 2.4 million in the first quarter of the 2025 fiscal year. This sales dip was somewhat anticipated by Sony, who adjusted its sales target for this year down to 18 million from a previous goal of 21 million. Despite this, Sony ended the previous financial year with a record of 20.8 million units sold. Monthly active users, a crucial metric for engagement, rose to 116 million, indicating healthy user interaction despite the hardware sales drop. Analysts suggest the reduced sales can be linked to the absence of new PS5 exclusive titles, as Sony confirmed no major franchise releases will occur this financial year.

Why are PS5 sales declining?

The decline in PS5 sales can be attributed to a combination of factors including lowered sales targets, a lack of new exclusive titles, and overall market saturation as the initial surge in demand post-launch wanes.

The PlayStation 5 was released on November 11, 2020, and quickly became a coveted console due to its powerful hardware and exclusive game library. Titles like "Demon's Souls," "Spider-Man: Miles Morales," and the anticipated "Final Fantasy XVI" contributed to its popularity. However, fans are now waiting for new releases from major franchises, which could rejuvenate interest in the console.
